Louisiana Passes Responsibility for Implementing Healthcare to Federal Government

Posted date:  November 15, 2012  |  No comment

On Wednesday, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindalai??i??s administration told the Federal Government that the continue to stand by their rejection of the new HealthCare law. In a seven-page letter to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, the Louisiana Health and Hospitals Secretary Bruce Greenstein observed that Louisiana intends to leave it to the federal government to run the health insurance exchange in the state. Opining that the new requirements on health care by the federal government are sure to be a failure in the long run, Greenstein wrote, ai??? The letter also observed ai???The State of Louisiana has repeatedly stated that the law has severe legal problems, is bad policy and is unworkable. Those beliefs remain unchanged,ai??? stating the current Louisiana administrationai??i??s opposition to the law. The exchanges are supposed to be enrolling people from October 2013 and be fully operational from January 2014.

In his letter, Greenstein continued to call the healthcare law unjust taxation and that it would hurt private businesses and job creation. He wrote ai???The full extent of damage the (health care law) causes to small businesses, the nationai??i??s economy, and the American health care system will only be revealed with time ai??i??ai???

However, at least one Republican, the Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon expressed his reservations about handing over the responsibility of building state insurance exchanges to the federal government and said, ai???When the feds build the exchange, they will build it according to their political agenda and that gives me concern as a person ai??i??ai???

Louisiana is one of the 26 states that had sued the federal government over the new health care law and it seems that neither Obamaai??i??s re-election, nor opinions of the Supreme Court in the matter has done much to alter opinions in the state regarding health care. Greenstein supported his objections and decision to allow the federal government to set up the insurance exchange as, according to Louisiana government, the health insurance exchanges have unrealistic deadlines and regulations about them also remain ambiguous in several aspects.
