Air India has recently launched a new category of class called the premium economy class in the Delhi-Guwahati-Imphal sector. Air India has created this new class to cater to the needs of the government employees. Initially, Air India was planning to completely do away with the premium class and convert the entire seating into economy class for domestic flights. One of Air India officials shared the reason behind this move. The official informed that government officials have been requesting for a premium offering as business class had been completely removed. The official also added that Air India would not be doing any reconfiguration with respect to the seat spacing.

Air India would be converting the first two rows of the economy class into premium economy class by leaving the middle seat unsold. The other extra services that would be provided for premium economy passengers include lounge access, priority boarding, premium food and priority check in. If there is no booking for the premium economy class, the first two rows of seats would be sold as Economy class seats including the middle seats. The premium economy class has become hugely popular in the international airlines segment as the ticket cost is only slightly higher than the economy class.
